Chapter Twelve

Darcy

As May rolled into June, New York welcomed spring like an old friend – reliable and just what you expected. On the subway this morning Darcy had stood next to a woman holding the brightest bunch of daffodils poking out the top of their paper wrapping and the smell evoked the season as much as the sunshine warming the city when she emerged onto Seventh Street. She stopped at the florist herself but instead of a bunch of spring flowers, this time she chose a terracotta pot filled with geraniums.

‘Let me get the door.’ It was Rupert behind her on the stoop when she arrived at the Inn. ‘Or give me the pot.’ He gave her no choice and took it from her.

‘Just pop it in the hallway, I’ll find a place for it.’ She shook out her arms. ‘The pot wasn’t heavy at first, but I’ve walked four blocks.’ She did the honours and opened the front door. With the time well before 7 a.m. they were greeted with nothing but a stream of sunlight in the hallway.

Rupert left it at the entrance to the lounge and went back to retrieve his bags of groceries from the stoop.

‘What do you think?’ she asked once he appeared inside. She’d positioned the terracotta pot in front of the open fireplace and was admiring the heartleaf geraniums with their dark green leaves spilling out of the sides of the pot and their umbel-like clusters of purple flowers.

‘Much better than the fire for springtime,’ he smiled.

‘It’s another gorgeous day.’ When Rupert went through to the kitchen Darcy took a moment to look out the front window of the Inglenook Inn, onto the street with comings and goings just like any other day. A few weeks ago it had been a sea of umbrellas at this time of the morning – multiple colours shielding the people beneath as they hurried about their business. But now everyone moved more leisurely, reluctant to give up a chance to bathe in the beauty of this city now that spring was in full swing. Last night she and Myles had walked in Central Park, a rarity in their busy lives but necessary for sanity, and the entire park had started its push of colour, awash with fragrant magnolia flowers and a sea of purple, pink and white lilac blossoms on the little path along Sheep Meadow. Temperatures were on the up and, with them, Darcy’s spirits. It had been a hectic few months but her wedding to-do list was littered with ticks and it was all coming together.

While she waited for the computer to wake up Darcy chatted with Rupert about the lunches today. They had a family in the suite upstairs who’d arrived very late last night and had requested a meal before they went off to explore. Darcy had felt for them – they were exhausted after travelling all the way from Tasmania – and she looked forward to making sure they were comfortable and giving them some advice about how to spend their time in the big city.
